Takedown
Every year at the start of my Production Techniques class (you know the theme song … you’re singing it right now, aren’t you. I win.) I have the students do a production takedown. It’s like an arranging takedown, but with a focus on tones and mix instead of just parts. For the last few years, I’ve used “Desert Rose” by Sting. I’m looking for something new.
Any suggestions?

“Hey Ya” by Outkast. There’s a deceptive lot goin’ on in there.

….and, it includes the Christ-centered lyric,
“Don’t wanna meet your daddy.
Just want you in my Caddy.”
I say, get those kids into a frothy, hormonal mess and see what happens.

Yes, “her shadows play in the shape of a man’s desire” and “each of her veils, a secret promise” are much more appropriate.

Oh, damn! I’d never read the actual lyrics to that song. That’s zexy!

Yeah, it’s pretty hawt.
I ended up not really having time to rework the whole takedown, so I showed them my work on “Desert Rose” and made them do two of the best songs every produced:
“R-E-S-P-E-C-T” by Miss Aretha, and
“Since U Been Gone” by our girl Kelly.

Wait…did my class not have to do this or did I just overlook that assignment?
