Every year at the start of my Production Techniques class (you know the theme song … you’re singing it right now, aren’t you. I win.) I have the students do a production takedown. It’s like an arranging takedown, but with a focus on tones and mix instead of just parts. For the last few years, I’ve used “Desert Rose” by Sting. I’m looking for something new.

Any suggestions?

….and, it includes the Christ-centered lyric,

    “Don’t wanna meet your daddy.
Just want you in my Caddy.”

I say, get those kids into a frothy, hormonal mess and see what happens.

    Yeah, it’s pretty hawt.

I ended up not really having time to rework the whole takedown, so I showed them my work on “Desert Rose” and made them do two of the best songs every produced:

    “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” by Miss Aretha, and

“Since U Been Gone” by our girl Kelly.
