President Elect

President Elect

“Baaaaa-rack! Ohhhh-bama! Barackobamarackamaba, Baaaa-rack! O-bama, ooooh-bama!” was sung over and over again by Sophia, age 3 as we shopped in Target today. “Honey, do you know who you’re singing about?” I asked her. “No, not really, but I like to say it, it sounds fun.” Nice. You listen to a little NPR while on errands, you change a little history for the country, you get a little fun song. Again I say, nice.

Whether you voted for him or not, I think I can say this is a “well done” step for our country’s history as a whole. I’m excited for the world (to a degree) that my kids are heading into. One where this sort of thing isn’t out of the norm.

  1. I posted this last night. I did not get home till almost 11pm and did not hear any results. This was my first reaction.

Today something historic happened. Many people I know will miss it because of politics. Our country, my country just elected an African American as president. WOW! Think about this for a minute.

Were it 145 years ago the man who is president would be property. The man who is president would have no education except what was done illegally as it was against the law to teach a black person to read or write. The man who is president could not vote, move, go to school and a whole list of other restrictions all based upon the color of his skin, were it 145 years ago.

Were it 100 years ago, he would not be able to own property, he would not be able to sit in the same church as a white person, he could not look a white person in the eyes, play sports with a white person and I am sure you get it.

Today is hugely historic. I am so proud to be an American. I did not vote for Obama, his ideas and his ideology are not mine. His politics are not in line with what I hold to be true, but I will say this. I will pray for MY president.

  2. I admit that I shed a tear or 70.

  3. Heck, my Dad… the Goldwater Republican… was wiping tears.

  4. Heck…Nathaniel “voted” for Obama as early as last year–for the primary vote–in his first grade classroom. They learned all about the primary candidates…and did a little fake vote in their classroom…and Nathaniel voted for Obama.

So we, the loving, caring, interested-in-what-our-kid-is-learning-in-Public-School type of parents asked him why he chose Obama…he answered simply, “Because he is African-American”
