IMAP kept connecting then freezing, it would then refuse to connect. It presented me with an SSL certificate that was expired, it synchronized without matching up folders so that all 3000 emails ended up back in my inbox. That sort of thing.
I am thinking that it is probably RAM, but also possibly ROM. Did you try the back up subtroverted system? I have had to renew my SSL certificate more times than I care to count.

it happened on two different wifi connections and on my iPhone. Not a local problem. It was hosted gmail for my domain, not just straight email.
