Wall*E was watched for the first time in our household recently, too. Please take this metaphor loosely, but the plant finally growing amidst destruction reminded us of perhaps the hope Noah felt when the dove came back with an olive branch. "God thinks the Earth is worth saving!"

Chad, I finally saw WALL*E tonight, for the first time. It was achingly beautiful, and one of the most romantic things I've seen. I actually held off on reading this full review until now (aren't you proud of me) and, having read it, I agree with you. The dialog seems very displaced, poorly crafted.

I loved, LOVED the ending credits montage, which tells the future rebirth of earth-bound humanity by simultaneously taking us through the history of human art (hey June, what's up?), from cave drawing to hieroglyph, on up through impressionism and the like. Loved it.

Thanks for writing this, Chad. I'm glad I finally got to read it all the way through.

I am doing you a favor, Dan...you don't have to be the comment killer anymore =-) I may officially steal your title...at least for this thread.
I have to confess. I think I messed with Chad's fate during our viewing of Wall*E. There was a point about 45 minutes into the show when both children turned to me and said, "mommy...peepeepoopoo, please". Chad was sitting in the aisle seat and I was seated on the other side of the two children. It would have made more sense for Chad to take the two kiddos to the restroom, but in an effort to protect his moviegoing experience, I decided to take them. I hurled myself into the aisle...stepping on massive amount of popcorn and attempting to keep track of the number of things you are required to bring when you take children to the movies. The booster seats proved to be yet another obstacle as they are actually heavy enough to keep the seats in the down position. Anyhoo...you get it. I was the martyr.

Well, as we exited the theatre, Chad began his "end-of-the-movie review" and he started talking about everything that he stated in this post. I just listened for awhile and then looked at him, totally confused. For the life of me, I could not figure out what he was talking about. Then it dawned on me...the scene he wrote about occurred at the exact moment that I was in the bathroom with Ella and Z. I realized in that instant, that if I had not messed with fate and had not robbed him of his predestined role as the aisle seated adult, he would still be able to hold Pixar to an impossibly perfect standard. Sorry, babe! My bad!

>>>let the viewer make the connections between these themes and the VERY political issue of global climate change. We would have made the connections, I promise. We’re quite bright.

YES YES YES!
GEEZ!

This is actually the second movie in a row that had this EXACT same message...a message that was slapped in my face the EXACT same way.
Stupid M. Night Shyamalan for doing it to me with The Happening. I could wax eloquent about his movies the way you do here about Pixar's (well, not exactly...you rock at writing and I do not) but I'm a HUGE Night fan---and I just left The Happening so disappointed that I just watched "An Incredible Truth" meets "(insert generic horror movie here)". Stupid Shyamalan. With all of his brilliance he delivered an incredibly weak payoff. (Spoiler alert) I sat there as they started revealing what was going on and I thought, "Really?!? The plants and trees are fighting back? Really?? We're not being nice to the environment, so they've come up with a mutant chemical to make us kill ourselves? Really? The plants are talking to each other? Really???)

I'm a little mad at him right now...

I just sat there during both The Happening and Wall-E thinking, "I GET IT, OK?!?!?! GEEZ!! STOP SHOVING IT DOWN MY FREAKING THROAT!!!"

(end of venting)

My Pixar picks are:

LOVE:
Toy Story I & II
Incredibles
Finding Nemo

DON'T LOVE:
Monsters Inc
Cars (my kids are still watching it...)
Rat-a-mov-iee
Wall-e
A Bug's Nightmare (p.s. I hate bugs)

However, I laughed my butt off during the opening cartoon for Wall-E. Funniest short EVER.

And thus ends my absurdly long comment.

June -

I totally missed pointing out the irony of a company like Disney pooh pooh-ing consumer waste.

Oh yeah, and there are times (like the 8th time I waded into this essay) that I wish I was content to just say... yeah, it was cute, and a little heavy handed.

Wow. Even for Chad...wow.

The Incredibles makes my top 10 list, (maybe top 5) and Ratatouille would probably be on that list as well.

We took our two boys to see Wall-E on Saturday. With each child's ticket we were given a blue, plastic digital watch. Umm...........would you like some irony with that ginormous bucket of popcorn?! And when I saw the "Consumer Products Division" in the credits it seemed like the irony was palpable. I know I shouldn't make a mountain out of a mole hill, but the throw-away (!!), cheap plastic watches gave me pause.

Wall-E is a cool little dude though. I like him. Eve (I thought it was "Eva" actually) is also great. When my boys asked me who was my favorite in the movie, I said Eve (Ok, I said "Eva!" Dumb me!) and when they asked me why, I said because she was a strong chick who stayed committed to her "directive" until she knew it was more important to not do so any longer.

I wish I could talk/think/write like you, Chad. My version of what you said (to a friend the next day) was: "Yeah, it's a cool movie...I mean, ridiculously heavy-handed with a total agenda, but yeah, fun."

Wow. That is absurdly long.

Ash & I saw WALL*E yesterday, and enjoyed ourselves even in a matinee full of four year olds. I wasn't too thrown off by the fat, lazy humans who have luxuried themselves into misplacing their sense of personal responsibility and collective initiative (because I have a vivid imagination), but I agree with your comments about the captain. He needed more time to change and fewer buzzwords to tell us he was changing. Ditto the other humans; the writers spent so much time making the robots human that they seem to have forgotten to do the same favor for the people.
