Cover Me

Zack, help me out. I want to do a cover song that’s obscure, but awesome. Older is gooder. Something with a haunting melody, that hasn’t been done to death, that can be tweaked out 9-ways strange in a massive science experiment of epic proportions. And i need it by Monday.

Everyone else, feel free to jump in.

It’s not that old, dating all the way back to ’93, but I’ve always been a big fan of I Shall Believe by Sheyrl Crow.

Oh yeah… how about my favorite oldie but goody – Van Morrison’s Crazy Love?

I’m looking for something a little more off the beaten path. I heard like 20 cover version of Crazy Love just this last week, at the Mission Springs Family Camp Talent Show Night.

Thank You for the Love by Mother’s Finest (or anything else from Another Mother Further).

(Ya didn’t think I was that funky did ya?!)

Let me think on this. This is a big deal. I can’t just spit out the first thing that comes to mind…..

    Mike, call me. Let’s talk…

Hey Michael – I’m a lurker to the site; read your post yesterday and now I just can’t get it out of my head. Go figure. Having no relation to you at all or accountability in playing the song, how about:

    Destination unknown – Missing Persons
In a Big Country – Big Country
    Everything Counts – Depeche Mode
Hip to be Square – Huey Lewis and the News
Video Killed the Radio Star – The Buggles

I think those are old enough to really get a great response from the crowd AND allow you to have some fun.

    Want to go older?

Mama told me not to come – 3 Dog Night
    Rave On – Buddy Holly
Season of the Witch – Donovan
    Happiness Runs – Donovan
    The Mighty Quinn- Manfred Mann
    Party Doll – Buddy Knox

Want to make them laugh? Spies like Us – Paul McCartney

But by your definition above, your money shot – Suicide is Painless.

This was fun to think about today – good luck and have fun no matter what you choose to do!!!

it isn’t Crazy Love. But you should also check out van morrison’s Into The Mystic. Great vibe and smoov like buddah.

Sorry, Mike. Looks like I missed my window. Next time….

PS – “Into The Mystic” is my favorite song of all-time, actually. Hmm.

OK, Mike. Here’s a fun list. Admittedly, this is more of a list of songs I’d like to hear you cover. So if you wanna make a record of all of them, you’ll swoon the sweet hell outta me:

Patty Griffin: “When It Don’t Come Easy”
    Sebadoh: “Skull”
    Radiohead: “Stop Whispering”
Bright Eyes: “At The Bottom Of Everything” (This song hates the piano. Good luck)
    Sons Of William: “Sympathy”
    Sia: “You Have Been Loved”
Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers: “Hearts In Pain” (Good chance you’d pick this yourself)
    Ben Folds Five: “Narcolepsy”
    Ben Folds (solo): “Jesusland”
Smashing Pumpkins: “Today” (Still one of the best modern rock records ever produced. Thank you, Butch Vig)
    Rufus Wainright: “In A Graveyard”
    Counting Crows: “Recovering The Satellites”
Sam Cooke: “Bring It On Home To Me”
Alex Chilton “The Letter” (Although think Joe Cocker’s version. MANY ways to update and simply KILL this tune)
Journey: “Only The Young” (Try it. At least for me.)
    Toad The Wet Sprocket: “Windmills”
Phil Collins: “Take Me Home” (Again, you can kill this)
Sarah McLachlan: “Do What You Have To Do”
Sting: “I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying”
    Ryan Adams: “Political Scientist”

Lemme know how this turns out. I’m more than curious now.
