I've been piloting/testing new text books this school year (many hours and adaptations to new things for a RTL) just to find out there is no $ to purchase them. (It feels like I've tried on wedding dresses and now I'm not getting married.) At first this really bothered me, but then I realized the bigger picture, "I hope my job exists next year." California's academic standards are among the highest in the nation, yet next year we will drop from 42nd to 47th in per student spending. A friend's husband was laid off yesterday with two kids in college...The recession seems everywhere to me.
