A fund-raiser that brought in $9,000 to our school last year has only brought in $2,500 this year. I’ve been piloting/testing new text books this school year (many hours and adaptations to new things for a RTL) just to find out there is no $ to purchase them. (It feels like I’ve tried on wedding dresses and now I’m not getting married.) At first this really bothered me, but then I realized the bigger picture, “I hope my job exists next year.” California’s academic standards are among the highest in the nation, yet next year we will drop from 42nd to 47th in per student spending. A friend’s husband was laid off yesterday with two kids in college…The recession seems everywhere to me.
Yeah – I work in an office full of portfolio managers, so ain’t no one happy around here, either. But we keep our jobs even if the market’s tanking. I’m very, very sad for your friend’s husband.
Thanks. I thought about blogging about it all one night (mostly school stuff) – and then it occurred to me, “What am I thinking? Blogging is my escape!”

I guess Harry singing “Surry With the Fringe On Top” to Sally is now cultural history.

Yep, the Consumer Discretionary sector is always the first to get screwed in a “Consumer’s Recession”. Poor old Sharper Image.
