I have new favorite crush, author Michael Chabon. Googling him brought my to his wife, Ayalet Waldman, and to this essay of hers on parenting: Mind Your Own Kids.

This is actually kind of cool. Hillsong released a new album, and then released a series of youtube videos where their guitarist runs down the parts he played on the record. Our worship team is always bringing in, and bringing up, young players, and this sort of thing hits that spot perfectly.

Amen, Amen and Amen.
I’ve never understood why there has to be a “right” and “wrong” (and a “God’s way”?) to parenting in the circumstances when both parents would lie in traffic to protect the little one and have only his or her best interest in mind. These conversations are unhelpful to me, raising my blood pressure and doing little else. Aren’t we all just figuring this out, one step at a time?
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my mentor moms. But they would never say (especially not knowing me at all), “Breast is best” - or “family beds are best” - or (fill in the blank).
My son had a fever for four days last week, reaching 104, which became a little scary. One of these mentor moms said, “It’s roseola.” I was just thrilled when the fever broke. The next day he had a rash. She was right.
When my daughter stays in her bed all night we light her favorite purple candle at breakfast. She stays in her bed a lot more often now. This morning she came to me early, and I missed the snuggles. She said, “I promise to be still and not talk.” She came in. Two minutes later there were feet in my face. The family bed is not for us. And we didn’t light the candle. :)
What am I trying to say?…If you are parenting today, good for you. Whatever you are doing that works… or not… GOOD JOB!
Should June and I start our own mommy blog?
Zach probably doesn’t need to be reading my rant…
:)
I don’t want you going anywhere - if Zack doesn’t like it he can suck an egg (stinking party bail-out that he is. That’s right, man, I’m talking to you!)
Reason # 406 why Cerise must never be a mother: Parents get this unsolicited advice ALL THE TIME, not to mention that even before the kid is born there’s not only advice coming from everywhere, but people - total strangers - trying to touch your effing womb, for the love. All my (many) friends with kids say so. I would be telling people to bugger off multiple times every day until my progeny was like 30. Not conducive to me someday [alakazam] turning myself into a nice person.
