I was watching these go by, and was struck by how symmetrical all of the faces were. Regardless of the other attributes that changed over time, the symmetry seemed consistent across the years.
June, our resident art expert, has anyone ever done any research into the differences in how the sexes paint members of the opposite sex? I’m curious to know if there are consistent differences in how men paint women, compared with how women paint women.
I have heard this Bach cello suite practiced in my home approximately 1,000 times. Hearing it in this context brought new life to it. I was also mesmerized… and every once in a while woke up to think “I know this one! I know this one!!” I guess I am still 8 inside sometimes.
Uh, let’s not call June any kind of “art expert” from now on, ok? (Perhaps art dilettante at best.) And no Mike, I’ve not heard of any such study. When I poked around online looking for such info, all I found were a few silly forums where a male artist would say something like “Anyone else ever notice how men paint women how they want them to be and women paint women how they actually are?” And then everyone else would go “Nu-uhh!” and proceed to ramble on about how they paint whoever they want however they want and then everyone would start comparing how many nudes they’d each had rejected by galleries for showing too many nipples. This is just one of the many reasons I stick to non-representational art: no nipple issues.
