Lost: Who Is Jacob?
Spoiler Alert!
I thought I was out, but tonight’s episode pulled me right back in. I’m hooked. Now I have to go back and watch the 6 episodes I missed while I was being too cool for school.
So, anybody else curious about who Jacob is? Well, he shows up as a visible person for exactly one frame:
For those of you who have not yet seen tonight’s episode (May 9th), I can pretty much guarantee that the comments of this thread will contain spoilers.
Ok… so my five cents…
1. That looks like Jack’s dad. I know he has long hair…but he DID look pretty haggard when he went off the deep end with Ana Lucia in Australia.
2. What’s with Richard (Nestor Carbonell) never aging?
3. Ben’s mother died in childbirth, as do all of the mothers on the Island.
4. Locke can’t die. He’s too crucial. And he heals reeeeeal fast.
5. It’s possible I watch too much TV.
Dude,
You bailed at the wrong moment. The lowpoint this season (and for the show, as far as I am concerned) was the Hurley-centric “Tricia Tanaka is Dead” episode that concluded with Hurley driving the VW bus around. Lame.
The five or so since then (including tonight) have been as good as ever. I think this season has gotten a bad shake because of the oddly shaped season. My hope and faith in Lost is renewed, because Jacob scared the hell out of me.
Yes…Lost is back. The truth is that most of this season was filler. The Hurley Bus episode, the diamond heist episode (what a crap waste of time that episode was.)
Now that the show time line is firmly established with the execs at ABC (3 more 16 episode, uninterrupted seasons if your aren’t up on the current events.) The show should be back on track with no more waste of a Wednesday episodes.
The show producers always had 100 episodes in mind. Now the total will be 120. So lets hope most of that filler was in this season.
I’ll be damned if that doesn’t look like Kris Kristopherson!!!
Great episode and how creepy was that scene in Jacob’s Cabin. And if Ben wasn’t creepy enough before, he’s sealed the deal. Michael Emerson is an incredible actor. He really commands your attention in all of his scenes. Terry O’quinn (Locke) is great too. So these sequences with the two of them together are pure TV gold…
Last night was definitely one of the darkest episodes of the season. It played out like a ghost story.
I knew there was a reason why I found the Addison Road blog!
This show is still on the air?

You’re fired. This is a cynicism-free / geektastic zone.
I forgot about the diamond episode. That was bad. Other then that one and the VW one, I’m trying to remember what might be qualified as filler. I have only vague memories of the first six episodes. I remember the Jack / Julia dialogs and the fact that Sawyer got busy with Kate. I remember that, because Evangeline Lilly is officially my eye candy on the show, which works out great since Josh Holloway is Erica’s eye candy.
^^Nice.
Chad–agreed–the VW bug was a LOW point of this season for sure. The diamond one was slightly better, mostly because we got to see the demise of island idiots Nikki and Paulo. BURIED ALIVE!
That was great…
That said-it was kind of cool to see how the VW bug got there, who the dead dude in it was, etc…not to mention the end of the Dharma Initiative…oooooo…I just got chills.

Chad you’re right, there probably wasn’t anymore strictly “throw away” episodes. (And technically Hurley did find Ben’s dad in the VW so that turns out to be kinda cool) but I would say that the whole first 10-15 episodes could have been condensed down to about three. It was belabored and dragged out and frankly boring. Constantly introducing more characters….blah. They lacked the fit and finish of the first two seasons. Let’s hope next year is better. I’m signed up for the long haul.
So I love the whole free-market, go-where-the-wind-takes-us kind of feel that blog threads usually take on — we’ve gone from “Who is Jacob?” to discussing the merits of the show in general to why we don’t like Corey. I was going to continue the whimsical motion of the thread by introducing a list of recipes for meals made from freeze-dried food and indigenous island plantlife, but instead I’m going back to square one:
Could Jacob be Alvar Hanso?
Also, re: Richard never aging, note the fine print on the bottom of the Hanso page:
“Life-Extension Project”…
(cue Twilight Zone theme)
Jeremy,
I will agree that the season seemed to sputter a bit, but I remember feeling the same thing at the top of season 2… who are these tailies? (all of whom have been now killed off) It wasn’t until mysterious Henry Gale emerged that season 2 really took off for me. I guess this season, I was a little better prepped for the now signature Lost “Paradigm / Viewpoint Shift” phenomenon that seems to be present in seasons 2 and 3. Each season seems to broaden the world, making the viewer uncomfortable early in the season before it comes ripping back into the reality that we dropped into the first moment we met Jack three years ago.
I love this show.
Check out this post someone just left on my blog…
There was way more than one frame – if you look around online you’ll find a lot more pictures of him than that.
Crazy episode. I don’t think Locke is dead. SO much stuff revealed about Dharma. What was that gray powdered line? I guess Ben truly is evil…
GOOGLE HERE I COME!
I like the fact that they actually got me disliking Jack, for a bit. I didn’t think that would happen. Also I can’t decide which “side” Juliette is on.
I was a little concerned that Richard hadn’t aged from the moment young Ben met him, to when we see him around camp etc. present time.
So were the first set of “hostiles” supposedly born on the island? Yeah, this is getting good. I tried my best each Wed. night to draw Mike back in. Last night I just decided to turn it up really loud and continuously say, “Oh my gosh…”
^^I think the original hostiles were the ones that crashed there 16 years ago or whatever…the group that Rousso says died off one by one. Becuase her and Ben have a kid…hmmm…
THIS IS FANTASTIC…Jacob, Benjamin, Locke…Israel…

I just assumed she was sitting there looking at the blog redesign.
Wow.
on the topic of ‘filler’, tell me if this is a stretch… with the 6 week break in the middle of this season and the necessary…”less than satisfactory” episodes, they have managed to land the final episode (23) of the season on the 23rd of may… and we’re expecting 16 episodes next season?…might be safe to assume that in season 5, 1 episode will get cancelled making it 15. so, 23, 16, 15…
Let’s just force the rest of the numbers and say they will combine 8 and 4 into the last season (for 12 episodes) and if we really wanna go nuts, the 6 week break in this season could be subtracted from the 48 episodes in seasons 1 and 2 to get 42!
Yay! 6 seasons and all the numbers accounted for! (this just makes me feel like the break and filler episodes were ‘demanded by the island’…or jacob…)
My favorte part of this show is the Sleestacks.
Jacob is definitely Terry O’Quinn. My compadres on the GL web team did hi-def screen shots, and the forehead says it all. I’m going with the Jacob = twin scenario.
BTW, I had to avoid this blog until after lunch, when I finally watched the episode. Do you know how hard it is to avoid spoilers when you don’t have TV??
Aly,
It’s not our fault that you’ve tried to escape the borg.
Hey, how ’bout those Dodgers?
The borg?
No one escapes the borg.
Resistance is futile.
It’s totally something Biblical. I haven’t quite figured it out yet. Clearly the role of parents is important in some way, because all of them pretty much suck… nope, I must stop thinking about it, lest I go mad.
Yuck, that beer that Sawyer et al found in the VW bus was crazy old.
Seriously, this is still on the air?
Nobody challenge my geek status. Just don’t.
For all questions Lost with greater efficiency than Wikipedia, and for an answer to Jacob
http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Jacob
From what I have gathered, Jacob is Ben’s father. Jacob was the janitor for Dharma and was killed by his son in the overthrow by the others. Ben left his fathers body in the van that he drove to jobs when they went to celibrate Ben’s birthday. Earlier in the season Hurley went on a joyride in this same van which was the first introduction of Jacob. From what I saw on that episode, death is not the end when you are “Lost.”
As for the expecting mothers of the island why do you think they all die? Could it be that this is what ben has held on to his whle life and through the island is manifest. This could be the tie to the “magic box” that everything comes out of. But the real question is what will happen to John??? I feel like if he dies then he wil take Jacob’s place as a guardian and Ben will have to answer to him. John said that he wanted “all the answers” and he just may get them.

jacobs the monster
If the mystery is not mysterious enough, capture jacob’s picture from above and save it on your desktop. Download the free version of the photo-editor software called, Irfanview from their IrfanviewDOTcom website. Install it. Open Jacob’s picture and from the IMAGE menu drop down to Enhance Colors (Shift G). Enhance brightness to 96, and contrast to 111.
Is that a monkey, or a cat?
some people say that the guy in the chair looks like Christian, Jacks dad. I think there is a connection between Christian and Locke. This is because the first time we see Christian is in the Walkabout episode and when Jack chases him into the bush, Locke comes out with the bore he caught. In the White Rabbit episode Jack goes of into the jungle to look for his dad and when he sees him and tries to run towards him he falls over the cliff, and at that point it was Locke who saved Jack.
The produces hinted that Jacob is what the Emporer is to Star Wars, so that alludes to a pretty significant character who is pulling the strings with Ben as the first sith apprentice and now Locke.
I’m sure whoever Jacob turns out to be (that is if he actually is a person and not a personfication) it will be quite a revelation Just like Locke being Jeremy Bentham.
It is apparent that the Island is exhibiting what would be considered SCIFI type properites, negatively charged exotic matter stabilsing wormholes to allow time and space manipulation.
The key to Jacob is the key to the organic consciousness of the island to be able to manifest itself as people and to appear in the most unthinkable of places such as on the freighter before the C4 goes off to let Michael know ‘now you can go’.
Mind bending.
Jacob is John… and John is Jacob…
Chad, you’re crazy! “Tricia Tanaka is Dead” is the BEST episode!
