My book of “Jeopardy” memoirs would be dismally short. However, true game show fans might be interested to know that I was interviewed by Dan Enright (the guy who orchestrated the rigging of “Twenty-One” — see the film “Quiz Show,” or Wikipedia, for further details) to go on “Tic-Tac-Dough” in 1979. I won $30,000 worth of cash and stuff, some useful (a car) and some not (incredibly kitschy $500 bathtub faucet handles and spigut that we still have boxed in our garage to this day). I also won a trip to the French Riviera — for one person. (We swapped it for two tickets to London.)

The orange book is the “Focus on the Family Complete Guide to Family Health, Nutrition and Fitness.” Five years in the making. Everything I know in one 1,000 page book, all for $23.08 plus shipping at Amazon.com. (Put my name in the search engine and it’s the first to come up.)

Paul, yes that’s the book I mean. It lives on my nightstand. (Though sometimes when everyone has been well, in every way, for awhile, it makes it to the floor underneath my nightstand.)I think it’s weird that you referred to something orange, as did Michael. Maybe I’m just orange sensitive.

Zack, your instinct would be correct — the cough event during the exam involves checking for hernia, not the jewels, so you’d definitely want to head for the exit. By the way, do you know why you’re supposed to turn your head while coughing during said exam?

June - glad you like the book. I assume you mean the baby book which is red. (There will be a new edition in October, or thereabouts, by the way.) The big orange book has even more health info, mostly for adults. The cough exam isn’t discussed, however.

I agree. You’ve come a long, long way over the past dozen or so years, though you’ve always been a great recanteur. Sometime I’d enjoy reading an account of your campout on the morning of the Northridge quake (as well as Chad and Matt’s trip to the donut shop that morning), or the tale of you and Chad babysitting the Moore kids when one of them had a Code Brown.

Cerise, for the record I’m a family physician. (Actually some people actually follow my advice, though after 15 hours it doesn’t always feel that way.)

I just say: “If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry.” (For the record, I didn’t actually laugh out loud either, even though it’s a well-told tale of calamity and hijinks. Just a couple of “Oh, dear god in heaven”s. The guy still doing time kind of killed it for me.)

Maybe the 15-hour nonstop workday today is affecting my sense of humor, but I’m not sure what’s funny here. Maybe I missed something. Maybe it’s because I spend my whole day trying to convince people not to do dumbass things to themselves, usually to no avail. Maybe because somebody has to clean up the mess and pay for the damage. Bah, humbug.

P.S. I’m glad no one was injured or killed.

HA! i totally have friends who would do that… we live in a pretty quiet area too… and they’re always looking for creative “pranks.” their last idea included a buttload of cement (like 50lb.s) and finding someone who had a pond in their yard… it doesn’t matter if they like you… when they’re bored they just go. Someone got forty ounds of flour on their driveway once… then it rained… pain in the ass to get off… one of the guys just read that story and i’m worried… i didn’t mention that we live among some of the largest mountains in the west…

As for jail, I couldn’t tell you, really. I was in Ventura County juvenile lock-up. A dozen bunks to a room, group showers, and horrible food. All I remember was that it was incredibly boring…..but what did I expect for misspent tax dollars?
