Thanks Mike. I’d never read Wondermark before. I think I have maybe one granule of patience left for the “I’m spiritual but not religious” person. Besides sounding like something from a bad script, it’s a bit like saying “I’m human but not ethnic.” Umm…what?!
Brian and I had dinner last night with a lovely couple who, along with some others, started a church in our area about a year ago. It’s a contemporary (or would that be “post-modern?”) church, where the folks sit at round tables and munch pastry and coffee during the service, and amongst other things, sometimes there are artists working on original works during the message. The cool thing is, our friends with whom we dined last night don’t seem to think of themselves as being particularly progressive or hip or more spiritually enlightened…meaning, they don’t wear their church style (beliefs, perspective, approach…not sure what to call it) on their sleeve in that repelling way that so many, dare I say it, emergent folk do. I know that the emergent church doesn’t have much to do with style but sometimes the whole ‘we’re spiritual but not religious and we would nevereverever drink grape juice for communion and have you seen our new missional parking lot?…feel free to add some graffiti to it while you’re there, and yes, we’re ok with swear words’ thing gets wearisome and worse yet, it detracts from the truths of the emergent intent.
At least, to me it does.
