tongues

Good News! The canon of Essential Orthodoxy for Southern Baptists now includes a prohibitions against speaking in tongues. Keep a sharp eye out for the worst use of a sports analogy in a theological controversy award winner.

[sarcastic rant] Oh, no, that’s good. Really kind of pithy and sound-bitey. That sports analogy.

Here’s the thing - Christians get so freaked out about denominations and how devisive they are. They think they need to break down the walls and really join the Family of God up in a big, loving cuddle party. I submit to you that Christians haven’t been devisive enough. Clear lines need to be drawn on really important issues, like how you pray when you’re bloody well alone, and kudos to this seminary for leading the way.

the line has been drawn, the old rivalry rekindled. but in this day and age of free agency (sorry, i mean: those seeking a more relevant spirituality) and lowering salary cap figures (sorry again, i mean: tithing parishioners), I find it interesting that the SoBat’s have resorted to an aggressive full court press and tougher defense. Its not pretty and it won’t put fans (I mean rich donors) in the seats, but it sure makes it tough on opponents who come into their arena (damn! sorry! I mean: church.)
Well, lets look at the schedule though; the P-Costal’s may have an easier schedule from here on out (f- me! I really mean: more flexible and open form of expressionary worship which appeals to a world of people who are encouraged to be….”free”).
Stay tuned! Upsets have happened before.

Small world… John Revell (who was quoted saying basically nothing in the article) goes to my church, and I taught his son guitar lessons for a while.

Wow…finally got around to reading this. Baptists and Pentecostals are on different teams, teams that aren’t even in the same league? Wait…what?

1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

I go to a Southern Baptist Church, and I can testify that they do lick stamps.

I’m not sure if all of you are familiar with the background of tongues/no tongues (gimme a break here… I’m trying to choke it down) in evangelical “conservative” churches.

It’s simple: in some denominations, some churches or leaders in those churches have taken the stance that if you don’t speak in tongues, you don’t have the Holy Spirit. Period. Or, if you don’t, you’re just not as spiritual… you get the idea. Obviously ALSO not scriptural, and pretty divisive.

Churches have split up over this, and continue to do so.

So some denominations that have been burned by this particular conceit have simply banned the practice in corporate worship as divisive. This is purely because some people who think they’re very spiritual have MADE it so, of course.

It’s ridiculous in both directions, of course, and shows again how pride strangles churches.

Sorry to bore you if you know all about this already. I know Aly does, since she grew up in the Church of God, where this kind of split happened some.

And ridiculous as it is: what would YOU say if you were in a leadership position, and somebody with growing influence in the laity of the church told YOU that if you don’t speak in tongues, you just aren’t spiritual enough to fill your position. And what if that person was attracting a following, and causing divisiveness in your church? It might, just might, cause you to over-react just a tad, mighn’t it?

    That’s what happened, sadly.
