selling out - literally

This seems like an interesting way to raise money to promote a record. Joey Whitesides is selling 10 shares for $100,000 each to investors. He’s treating the record like a startup company, and trying to raise venture capital. I’m curious to see how the response is.

Okay, I’m no financial genius, but really? He’s hoping to make back $1M plus profits? Sorry, Joe. I can’t take that bet.

I think David Bowie did this a bunch of years ago. I’m pretty sure it worked for him. But when I see this it pretty much makes me laugh out loud at the audacity. I really hope it works for him. It’s balsy, but it seems like another “hey, I’m pretty sure I’ve got what it takes to be the next American Idol… and if Simon and Randy don’t think so they can !@#$% off…”

I really don’t think his music is anything like remarkable to pull it off. Also, absolutely no one in the Falling In music video even closely resembles the poor fellow in those ridiculous pictures. Which I guess is a good thing.

All that said, I don’t think his music is all that unpleasant to listen to…kind of like the fact that I still keep 3 Enya CDs in my collection because sometimes, every 10 years or so, nothing else will do.

My first opinion is perhaps unnecessarily rigorous. I’m obviously getting crotchety in my old age. He’s a good-looking, perfectly congenial looking fella with perfectly lovely, congenial-sounding music.

Geez - two months listening to Editors and I turn into a total hag.

And I put my name twice at the end. To make up for it, I will NOT sign this one and you’ll all be left wondering who the hell Morphea is.

What if 10 people aren’t interested? Then what?

Then he gets to go to the back of the line. “What line”, you ask? The one that has all of the other fairly talented singer/songwriter/performers in SoCal who may or may not deserve their shot at being heard in a public place. FYI, the line starts in Hollywood, wraps around Long Beach, passes back through Burbank by way of Ventura, and even comes down my street in Orange County.

The whole thing seems gimmicky to me. If this doesn’t work, he’ll probly offer to eat a bug for every person who buys his record.

He’d probably get further with that.
