I never thought of that when I was listening to Vin Scully, who got rid of his Tareytons decades ago, and no doubt is doing well today as a result.

Paul, I think the “Tareyton Ring” is actually referring to the stoma the user might eventually have installed.

That stupid jingle played endlessly in the 50s and it implanted in my brain. Here’s a little trivia that I recalled, confirmed by Wikipedia:

“In the 1960’s [The Flinstones] had strong ties to a sponsor, Winston cigarettes. In one memorable advertisement, Fred and Barney relaxed while their wives did housework, smoking Winstons and reciting the jingle “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should!” In 1963, Winston pulled their sponsorship from the show when Wilma became pregnant; after that point, the main sponsor was Welch’s Grape Juice.”

Other memorable cigarette lines: Salem ads used to show a gorgeous young woman puffing by a stream, as the announcer cooed “Take a puff — It’s springtime.”

And how about this jingle that played on every Dodger broadcast in 1958 and 1959:

Look for the ring, ring, ring, ring around
New dual-fiilter Tareyton!
The Tareyton ring marks the real thing
In mildness, and fine tobacco taste!

The Winston jingle actually had a more catchy tune.

Gretchen, I agree 100%. Smoking is NO joke. I take this habit VERY seriously.

By the way, this not only made it into my iPod, but I actually mixed it in with a clients’ edit today. I’m pretty sure it’s copyright-free at this point.

When I was student teaching, I had to do a heart and lung unit, where we taught the kids…no seriously…this song:

“Smoke, is no joke. Smoking is a terrible habit.
Smoking is bad for a woman, or man,
or a kid, or a chipmunk or a rabbit.
Smoking is dumb. Don’t puff, puff ’til you choke.
Smoking won’t do a thing for you.
Smoke is no joke.”

wow, and 9 years later, I still know it.

Ah. Marvelous. I had almost eradicated the jingle from my memory for all eternity (mostly by playing Vast really, really loud) when I came back here and found that Aly had written it out for me to remember always.

Wow, you’re right. That is profoundly uncool. “Winston tastes good like a CLAP CLAP cigarette should” has the cool level of plastic covered floral furniture and refrigerated merlot.
