Sounds good to me. BTW, all, we are now posting the sermons on our church website so you all can hear what Michael did with your help. Go to www.cccbp.org on July 31 or thereafter.

July 30th. Still a month away.

It's been a while since we had a good ol' fashioned "Come to Jesus" sunday at our church, and to me Genesis 19 just screams the duality of grace and justice. I'm just old fashioned enough to thing that giving people a moment in time to commit, or recommit, to living a live in God's grace is a good thing.

So, maybe we'll go that direction. Doug, how awful would it be if you suddenly came back to a church full of "born-again" evangelicals?

Hey, that ties in nicely with the generosity theme! "Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy" (Ez. 16:49).

You could continue my series on the life and faith of Abraham. Let's see July 30 would put us at Genesis 19- surely you can come up with some good stuff from the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. There is a lot to work with in this chapter. I really think you ought to give it a shot.

Hmm...I didn't realise that my name was linked to the SixpenceNTR site. It just goes to one of those domain look-up pages when I click, but 6pNTR looks pretty cool - no affiliation, though.

I like the idea of telling stories, too. Maybe your Veggie Tales video isn't such a bad idea. And thanks for fixing the html markup.

Paul, I just groaned so loud that I think I strained something. That was truly awful.

But, as my father has always maintained, a groan is as good as a laugh.

Check this week’s Newsweek magazine that deals with “The Giving Back Awards – 15 winners who use fame, fortune, heart and soul to help others.” I have found these stories quite provocative. Note in particular the story about Rick Warren (number 6) – I didn’t know all that he was doing with his Purpose Driven income. The “PEACE” idea that the article describes sounds particularly interesting.

Also, if you are short on content, you can burn at least five minutes with the story I told you many months ago -- I believe it was at our local Chili’s after a Christmas concert, and a partially consumed margarita was involved.

To wit: I dreamed one night that Chad and Erica wanted a tougher dog than Copeland, and purchased a Doberman that they named Mace, hoping that he would serve as a deterrent to any prowler that might happen by their home. But all Mace wanted to do was eat grass in their front yard. Despite his gentle vegetarian ways, they decided to keep him, hoping that his size alone would scare off any potential burglars.

One day Chad was fixing a sprinkler and dropped his wrench in the grass, which was overgrown because they had spent the previous week traveling to Fresno and Sacramento. As he was searching for it, you arrived and asked what was going on. At that moment, Mace strolled up with the missing wrench in his mouth.

“What’s with the big dog?” you asked innocently. And Chad replied…

“A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound, that saved a wrench, Mike Lee!”

Part of me really wants to join in the hi-jinks and suggest something like "How Much Does God Hate Sex?" or "Dancing: Soft-Shoeing Your Way Straight to Hell," but I think Eric's really onto something. How to live a life of generosity is something I wish I'd hear more about in church (if I went to church)...our culture makes it so easy to get trapped in a cycle of hording rather than giving, and finances is only the tip of the iceberg. (BTW, Eric: I noticed the link for your name is the Sixpence NTR site...could you give the story on that, cuz I'm pretty much internally combusting with curiosity. And also, welcome to AddRd!)

Another idea knocking around in my noggin for a sermon topic: Telling good stories. Granted, this is something about which I am personally passionate and maybe no one else would be interested in the least...but I suspect that many people would like to given the tools to share God's story and their story in a compelling way, without resorting to the Four Spiritual Laws and the like. Up until fairly recently, the Judeo-Christian tradition had a rich legacy in this area (Jesus himself was a heckuva yarn-spinner), but I think it's a legacy that has been largely abandoned for various reasons, and one we desperately need to reclaim.

That's my two pence.

How about "live frugally - give extravagantly".
I wish I could claim it, but it's the mantra my friend Harvey Stokes
(http://www.hamptonu.edu/arts_edu/music/stokes.htm)
taught me. It's not about money (well, it is, but not ONLY about money) but the ,<i>willingness</i> to give freely of whatever we have to offer: a meal to share, a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, thoughtful criticism, fellowship, laughter, etc.

Have you ever come across this web site?:

http://www.globalrichlist.com

When I'm feeling impoverished and deprived because I can't afford a new tech toy, I log on here and get a reality fix.

Just so you don't get the wrong idea, I don't come anywhere close to living up to the goal.
