So, we got a dog. Her name is Lucy (short for Lucille — we have this thing with old-people names for pets), and she’s a chihuahua-terrier mix with floppy ears that we rescued from the pound. She has to get fixed tomorrow, so we don’t bring her home until Monday…but man, are we psyched!
We were pretty set on getting a puppy — since we have cats and really want to set them up to win — but in the end, we just couldn’t stomach paying a breeder instead of rescuing an adult dog from imminent death. (We’re crazy liberals that way.) We had Lucy cat-tested at the pound to make sure she wouldn’t be aggressive with our current children, and since she was more afraid of the cat than the cat was of her, we took that as a good sign…Hazel and Pearl will have her doing chin-ups and running a 4-minute mile in no time!
So this is your fair warning: We are about to be Those People. The People Who Take Pictures of Their Dog and Post Them on the Blog. Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Doug,
You may be in store for more than you bargained for…

Congratulations! Lucy, you have no idea how lucky you are. Dude, bring it on. I want a holiday card with Lucy in a Santa suit, dammit.
But I want Lucy pictures (Hazel and Pearl pictures wouldn’t be amiss, either) now. NOW!

Yeah! Congrats on Lucy! She has good parents that I know will love her! :0)

My wife, Karen, was set on getting an adult female spayed house trained golden retriever/lab mix. She spoke quite fulsomely on the topic.
Then she went to the grocery store, and someone was giving away puppies… and she came home with a two month male puppy with a bad attitude and miserable personal habits. He was supposed to grow up big… but grew up a wart. He looks like Richard Nixon. (Think “Mars Attacks” with the human head grafted on a dog body.) He’s outstandingly stupid, though he likes people, at least.
It’s true… you can’t choose your family.

I can’t tell if that’s a congratulations or a cautionary tale, dude.

We paid $$$ for a pure bread, and things still went horribly wrong. (Max the Australian Shepherd does not live here anymore.) Good for your for going to the pound!

I’m simply observing that when people make plans about how they’ll “get a dog” and what kind of dog they’ll get, somehow the plans seem to work out about as well as “family planning” ever does.
Now we have three dogs… we WERE only going to have one… but dogs in need kept appearing.
Only two of them are smarter than me.
I’m better looking, though.

Well, here’s hoping Lucy is smart but not smarter than us. We hung out with her a couple times at the pound, and she was marvelous: enthusiastic but not spastic, lovey but not needy, vocal but not bark-o-rama. I guess we’ll keep our fingers crossed (and update you all as if you care).

Ah, but we DO. I’ve always been a little suspicious of people who don’t like dogs….

Lucy is “very advanced”.
