Geek Out

So, it’s 11:00 on a Saturday night, you have a pile of extra Mac’s lying around, and nothing to do. Why not build your own home server?
Yes, this is the sort of thing I actually do for fun. I’ll keep you updated if it works well. Eventually, the goal is to let Gretchen and I sync iCal together, access stored files from anywhere, and just generally, ya know, have a home server.
Ok, I haven’t fully worked out the usefulness part yet, but I did get Apache, MySQL and PHP to all behave together nicely. Huzzah.

So, are you just doing that with your two PBs? Or is there a third CPU I’m not seeing? That would be a cool thing, if you can get iCal to work that way. Let me know!

When did you get a 15 inch PB?
Chad 11:12 am on 5 February 2006 Permalink
And yes, I am that nerdy, that I am aware of the size and number of computers that my friends own.

the 12inch on the left is the one that got coffee’d on. The 15 inch on the right is on loan from APU.

So it was coffee that did in the 12 PB not just poor Mac workmanship?

wife carrying coffee too. bummer.

Gretchen, YOU coffee’d his Mac? [laughing] I was about to ask you just HOW THRILLED you were about having your own home server.

It’s working. Anytime I update my gigs calendar, it publishes to the home server, and whenever G opens her iCal on her mac, it automatically updates it with the latest info from the calendar I published on the home server. Her “Details of the Day” calendar does the same thing back the other way to me as well.
This works both if we’re at home, and if we’re at some other random location out in the world. Rock and Roll! If you’re interested in finding out how I did it, let me know, and I’ll send you the details.

[...] So, my little experiment from this past week has worked marvelously well. We now have a home server up and running, which you can see at http://houseoflee.homeip.net, if you’re interested. This server has ftp access, so I can use it to store files for clients, and it also has something called a WebDAV, which is the same technology that .mac runs off of. The result is that I Gretchen and I can use this home server to sync our calendars, and I can trick my mac into thinking it’s connecting to .mac, for things like system backup and folder sync. The good news? Everything we did is free. [...]
