Attendance is Mandatory

  • art and culture

For those you living within two hours of Los Angeles, there is an attendance-mandatory show this next Friday night, August 12th: Raul Midon is playing at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica. Let me put it this way - when was the last time you spent 90 minutes listening to a set with your heart on fire and your jaw on the floor? He plays guitar like a love child between Chick Corea and Dave Matthews. He sings like Bobby McFerrin and Stevie Wonder. He is the real, live, phat stanky deal. How can I possibly hype this guy any more?

If you miss this show, you will regret it. Hearing Raul Midon on recordings is nothing like hearing him live. (follow this link and watch the live videos) I promise, this tour is the last time you will ever get to see this guy in a venue this small. RSVP below.

  1. Oh, holy lord. I am….floored (hey, that rhymed). This cat has GOT to be the most exciting musician I’ve ever encountered since…uh…Bobby McFerrin, so long ago. My head is absolutely spinning with superlatives mixed with cuss words. I curse when I get really excited. You know, as a musician (and as someone who purchased a guitar just last night and now faces the terrifying task of trying to learn how to play the damned thing), part of me - OK, all of me - wants to just crumple to the floor, yelp “I am s–t!” and never sing another note again after hearing this dude’s chops. But he’s so perfect - so joyful, such a rampage of vicious skill, clever, clever lyrics, frickin’ jaw-dropping vocals [and that mouth trumpet! Egad!] and a kind of gawky charm that I can’t even consider getting down on mySELF. I’m too happy that he’s alive and making music on this planet!! I’m in love…

Michael, I owe you big time. I’m going to plug him into my headphones and go jump off the Space Needle.

  2. Bought the album. He seems to resemble Al Jarreau in more ways than I thought, since a lot of album space is given over to a more “pop-y” sound than is indicated in those two heart-stopping live tracks I heard on the website. It’s all good though, and though the hide-bound jazz/latin lover in me wanted more, MORE of that kind of thing, I can still hang with the other stuff, too. He’s still the most exciting bloke I’ve found in music for a long time.
