Batman Begins

  • art and culture

B & I are seeing this tonight with our friend Chris. I’m so excited I’m quivering like a newborn poodle.

REVIEW 6/16: Holy Hollywood, Batman! Christopher Nolan is an evil genius! Okay, maybe not evil…but his gritty, realistic take on the evolution of The Bat does suggest some kind of sinister bent. I cannot say enough good things about this film…I will not give a full review, since it would be hard to do that without spoilers, but I WILL say this: when everyone has seen it, I’d really like to discuss comic book mythology, universal archetypes, and Jungian symbology. [And also how much Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldham, Liam Neeson, Rutger Hauer, and (gasp!) even Katie Holmes were perfectly cast and directed. And how the score was terrific. And how the story ruled.] Bryan & I were up late last night exploring the wonderful world of superhero-dom and what it says about regular people. Much gold to be mined here. Go along, kiddies, and see the movie. Auntie Aly wants to talk about archetypes, gender, and Joseph Campbell.

  1. No shame in that. Christian Bale makes me quiver at any time. I’m so jealous of you.

  2. Oooh!!! Me too me too!

Worship team practice will seem eternal as I toil until the late show. I will miss Arnold, I must say. I hear he doesn’t even make a cameo. Whaat is that about?

  3. Aly, report in as soon as you can. Please relieve our suspense and tell us the answer to the question we’re dying to ask:

Do. You get. To see. Christian Bale. NAKED?????

    Thank you,
    Cerise

  4. Negatory. But I was glad. He wasn’t sexed-up, glistening Batman…he was normal guy Batman. THE MOVIE ROCKED. I will report more later, but I REALLY have to get some work done this morning. Just trust me when I say, all the movie geeks at aniticoolnews.com were not remotely joking.

  5. Ooh, I’m all a-quiver.

  6. Cerise,

Bloody, naked & f@$%ing crazy Christian Bale can be found in American Psycho. Perhaps you’ve already experienced the wonderment?

  7. Ash,

Yes, I quite enjoyed it. Though I think the acute pleasure caused me to black out for a time after having seen the movie and I forgot about it entirely. Thank you for reminding me.

Have you seen Equilibrium? He’s brilliant playing a fellow who is required by law (and is the most elite of the enforcers) not to show emotion but finds it pregressively harder as the movie unfolds to hide his feelings. All that jaw-clenching. Arf, arf.

I do respect him as an intelligent and accomplished actor, you know. It’s not just about the fact that I get all drooly thinking about him. [excuse me, I have to go now]

  8. a,
I think that’s why I’ve always been a batman-nerd. because the Lit major in me sees something so much deeper than other supers had to offer. I loved peeling back the layers of his sanity as I got older and less innocent. How is it possible that in the 30’s in America, children found a super hero who watched his parents get murdered, then lost his mind, then dressed up like a flying mouse to exact revenge on all of the OTHER crazy guys? Just brilliant. **It’s time to unabashedly start wearing my batman watch again. Thanks for the lack of spoilers. I’m taking out an equity loan so Beth and I can afford an Orange County babysitter so we can go see it next month. -c.witt

  9. It was the Depression, dude. The world was suddenly a lot less friendly a place.

Any money you spend will be worth it. Not to overstate.
